ATLANTA ADDS RAY KERR FROM SAN DIEGO
The Atlanta Braves acquired pitcher Ray Kerr, outfielder/infielder Matt Carpenter and cash from the San Diego Padres for outfielder Drew Campbell.
What does it give the Atlanta Braves
The Braves have made yet another trade! In this deal, Kerr looks like the key piece. The Padres are sending Atlanta $1.5 million as part of the trade, while Carpenter is expected to be traded by Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos. The latter has been quickly flipping players acquired this winter, so expect more trades to come.
What does it give the San Diego Padres
For the Padres, this trade was about moving most of Carpenter's salary. He exercised his $5.5 million player option for 2024 after only hitting .176 in 2023. In Campbell, San Diego gets a 26-year-old outfielder who played in Double-A ball this past season. So, the Padres essentially paid $1.5 million to get rid of Carpenter.
Fantasy impact
There is no fantasy impact with this trade, as Kerr may be well down the list of save and hold candidates in Atlanta's deep bullpen. Furthermore, Carpenter is likely on the move again (and struggled badly in '23) and Campbell is a marginal prospect.
