PHILLIES, RANGERS SWAP YOUNG SOUTHPAWS
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired pitcher Fabio Castro from the Texas Rangers for pitcher Daniel Haigwood and cash.
What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies
The Rangers had previously swiped the 21-year-old Castro off the White Sox in the Rule 5 draft in December, but recently designated him for assignment. The young southpaw doesn't have much size and his fastball isn't particularly hot, but what he does have he backs up with a strong change-up and a good curve. It's a bit of a strange move considering the Phillies aren't exactly desperate for bullpen lefties, but they'll have to carry him for the rest of the season or else he heads back to Chicago.
What does it give the Texas Rangers
Coincidentally, Haigwood is another former White Sox farmhand, traded to Philly in the November Jim Thome deal. Also a young lefty, Haigwood is much bigger than Castro and he's a starter who has looked pretty good at Double-A Reading this year. He doesn't throw much harder than 90 mph but has a great curveball and could very well reach the back of the Texas rotation in a couple of years, making this a very good deal for them.
