In a three-team trade, the Oakland Athletics acquired pitcher Juan Dominguez from the Texas Rangers; the Rangers acquired pitcher John Rheinecker from the Athletics and pitcher John Koronka from the Chicago Cubs; the Cubs acquired outfielder Freddie B
What does it give the Oakland Athletics
Dominguez adds to Oakland's unparalleled starting depth. He's a power arm with control issues. Since the A's won't need him to pitch in the Majors right away, Dominguez will be able to further iron out the kinks at the triple-A level. Eventualy, Dominguez should crack the rotation, especially if the A's decide to deal potential free agent Barry Zito.
What does it give the Texas Rangers
Koronka will immediately step into the Rangers' starting rotation--which is where Dominguez was slated before the trade. He'll be the fifth starter until Adam Eaton returns from injury. Rheinecker, who was trying out as a lefty specialist out of the Oakland 'pen this spring, will head to Triple-A Oklahoma. He may return to starting now that he's with the Rangers.
What does it give the
Koronka wasn't going to make Chicago's staff, despite the fact two of the Cubs' best pitchers (Mark Prior and Kerry Wood) will begin 2006 on the DL. Therefore, the club added the very versatile Freddie Bynum--who should thrive under Cubs manager Dusty Baker. Bynum will probably be used in a super utility role with the Cubs, which may allow Jerry Hairston Jr. to take over the starting second-base role.
