EDMONDS TO SAN DIEGO

The San Diego Padres acquired outfielder Jim Edmonds from the St. Louis Cardinals for infielder David Freese.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
The Padres hope Edmonds has something left in the tank. He replaces Mike Cameron, who is still an un-signed free agent. Freese had no future in San Diego, since Kevin Kouzmanoff and Chase Headley were ahead of him on the depth chart. The 37-year-old Edmonds hasn't been able to stay healthy the last two seasons, so the Padres are hoping to catch lightning in a bottle here.

What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
Freese could immediately become the Cardinals' third baseman of the future, and his path to the Major Leagues may be accelerated if St. Louis trades incumbent Scott Rolen--as expected--at some point in the off-season. This move also opens up center field in St. Louis for either Rick Ankiel to move over from right field or prospect Colby Rasmus to take over.
