MORRIS MOVES TO BUCS
The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired pitcher Matt Morris from the San Francisco Giants for Rajai Davis and Steve MacFarland.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
In an odd deadline deal between two non-contenders, the Pirates picked up a veteran righty who can help round out their young rotation for this year and next. A righty with excellent command, Morris has struggled terribly of late, but is generally a steady starter and can be viewed as a mentor the Bucs' many promising, young hurlers.
What does it give the San Francisco Giants
Clearly the Giants wanted rid of the struggling veteran during this dreadful season so they can take a look at someone younger. In return they got Davis, a 26-year-old outfielder with little big-league experience. His best tools are his speed and plate discipline, which indicates leadoff potential, but with Dave Roberts under contract through 2009 he might have to settle for a reserve role if he makes the Giants.
