YANKEES ACQUIRE PINEDA FOR MONTERO
The New York Yankees acquired pitchers Michael Pineda and Jose Campos from the Seattle Mariners for catcher/DH Jesus Montero and pitcher Hector Noesi.
What does it give the New York Yankees
Pineda is a legitimate stud right-hander with ace potential. He had a very promising rookie campaign in Seattle, so it's quite surprising that the Mariners parted ways with him so quickly. He should become a mainstay in the Yankees rotation for several years to come, though his numbers may suffer a little bit leaving Safeco Field for Yankee Stadium. Campos is another good young pitching prospect who will be given plenty of time to fully develop. The Yankees gave up a budding star hitter in Montero to get Pineda, however. They now have a hole at the DH slot.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners
How desperate were the M's to land a quality bat? Pineda is considered one of the top young pitchers in baseball, so clearly Seattle is taking a bit of a gamble here. Montero will immediately step into the spotlight with the Mariners, and he'll likely bat third or fourth in the lineup in 2012. He might also be given a shot at catching, but Seattle needs his bat in the lineup (first and foremost). Noesi is a decent arm who should vie for a rotation spot (now that Pineda is in Pinstripes). This deal will be analyzed for several more years to come.
