MACKOWIAK TO CHAMPS FOR MARTE

The Chicago White Sox acquired infielder/outfielder Rob Mackowiak from the Pittsburgh Pirates for pitcher Damaso Marte.

What does it give the Chicago White Sox
The defending champs have increased their already substantial bench depth with this deal. Mackowiak has played everywhere but shortstop, catcher and pitcher in his career, with most of his experience at third base and the outfield. He plays hard, he can run and he has a little pop in his bat, so he'll serve as a super-sub in Chicago.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
Having lost a few relievers to free agency, the Pirates made a strong move to bolster their bullpen by obtaining Marte. He's a hard-throwing southpaw who could still emerge as a solid closer, but he'll most likely remain a setup man in Pittsburgh. The one knock against him has been his attitude, but if the Pirates can keep that in check, he'll toss some strong innings for them.
