PADRES LAND ANOTHER OUTFIELDER

The San Diego Padres acquired outfielder Scott Hairston from the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor-league pitcher Leo Rosales.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
All season long the Pads have struggled to get consistent offense from left-fielders Terrmel Sledge, Jose Cruz Jr. and Milton Bradley. Here they add another bat with potential to the mix in Hairston, who has had trouble breaking through the depth of outfielders in Arizona. The 27-year-old has some power and solid discipline at the plate, along with the versatility to play some infield. That said, he's expected to be used in a utility role, unless the oft-injured Bradley gets hurt again.

What does it give the Arizona Diamondbacks
The D'backs traded from depth here and landed themselves a good-looking young reliever. Rosales is a 26-year-old righty who has put together some impressive credentials as a minor-league closer, including 14 saves in 24 games at Triple-A Portland this season. He's a guy the big club could plug into their mid-late-relief corps in the very near future.
