GLAUS TO TORONTO
The Toronto Blue Jays acquired third baseman Troy Glaus and shortstop prospect Sergio Santos from the Arizona Diamondbacks for second baseman Orlando Hudson and pitcher Miguel Batista.
What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays made no bones about the fact they needed to add a bopper to their lineup, so adding Glaus fills an obvious need. Glaus will play third base in Toronto, which means Corey Koskie will either be traded, converted to another position or benched. The Jays will use Glaus as their cleanup hitter, sandwiched between Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay. As for Santos, he'll spend a second season at the Triple-A level, and may challenge incumbent shortstop Russ Adams in 2007.
What does it give the Arizona Diamondbacks
In Hudson, the Diamondbacks add a premier defensive second baseman. In trading Glaus, Arizona will now shift promising left-handed hitter Chad Tracy back to his natural position (third base), and alleviate a logjam in the outfield in the process. Batista, who pitched in Arizona for three seasons (2001-03), will likely be used wherever he's needed. Therefore, the D'backs strengthened both their infield and outfield defense with this trade, added pitching depth and shed some salary in the process. A nice move by Arizona.
